The aim of this course is to introduce you to the main controversies in contemporary bioethics, especially to those concerning the intersection between ethics and technology.

At the end of the course, you will be equipped with the conceptual tools required to understand the main debates in ethics and technology as well as the most relevant positions in the debate.

Hopefully, you will also be able to take your own stance on these subjects.

For this purpose, we need your active engagement in this course to ensure the discussion to develop in line with the topics you find most intriguing, challenging and valuable.

In addition to the online course, we are piloting a complementary on-site course this semester with Dr. Steffen Steinert exclusively for students of the Hamburg University of Technology.

Organisation of the course

In the following videos, the academic supervisors, <spanclass="bold">Mirko Daniel Garasic and <spanclass="bold">Dr. Steffen Steinert, provide introductions to the topics at hand and set the frame for the course. Please note that the second video is only available in German as it is designed for the complementary course taking place on campus.

The design of the course is a mixture of individual reading sessions and group discussions, both of which are open for everybody. All you need is access to a computer with a current browser, an Internet connection, and, of course, a desire to learn. In order to benefit from the entire learning experience, you need to register for the discussion forum at <ahref="https://community.tuhh.de"target="_blank">community.tuhh.de. However, if you are only interested in the content-side of the course, you can also just take part in the reading sessions, no registration needed.

<pclass="note">For each release we will provide the exact link to the contents and the discussion here.

As you can see this course is organised around five themes:

We will start with <spanclass="bold">AI and robotics and then move on to the debate on <spanclass="bold">human enhancement. Next, we will look into the link between <spanclass="bold">[genetic] engineering and environmental ethics and consider the implications that <spanclass="bold">developments in neuroscience have for notions of <spanclass="bold">responsibility in law. Lastly, we will take a look at <spanclass="bold">robots and pizza delivery to gain some insights into roboethics and ethical issues of recent robot technology. Particular attention will be paid to the “controversies” over these topics, and different examples will be brought forth in order to ensure a lively and up-to-date discussion with and between students.

For each topic we provide a literature review including the main sources you should consider in the discussion. Therefore, it is necessary for you to first familiarise yourself with the provided content before joining the discussion.

The course takes place in an open discussion forum installed at the Hamburg University of Technology. Thus, as mentioned before, we need your active participation, reflecting on the topics and contents and trying to take your own stance in the discussion.
